From the beaches of Essaouira and the awe-inspiring Atlas Mountains to the bustling souks of Marrakesh, Morocco is a a true feast for all the senses. Home to a million and one tagines, including chicken with olives and preserved lemon and rich lamb with prunes as well as the famous diffa banquet, you are sure not to go hungry here.
The main square in Marrakesh, the Djemaa El-Fna, sells spices and leather handbags during the day but really comes to life as the sun goes down and hosts myriad food stalls selling fresh fish and cubes of flavoursome meat being grilled over hot coals. For the best view head to one of the bars overlooking the square for a cooling juice or fragrant Arabic coffee.
If you are looking for old-style opulence, one of the best places for a romantic meal is Le Tobsil. This old palace is hidden behind winking lanterns and an anonymous door deep in the medina. The evening begins with drinks on the roof accompanied by traditional music and then you move to sit around a pool at a petal-strewn table set – all of which are set for two. You start with a selection of salads, followed by a range of tagines then there is fruit and sweet pastries to finish. Pace yourself as there is no way you’ll be able to eat all of this and each and every dish is delicious.
